Father's Day is right around the corner and if you’re like me it has you thinking about the special men in your life. I am the proud mother of three amazing young women and have been lucky to share my parenting journey with an exceptionally loving and caring man. My husband David is a truly sensitive and attentive dad. He is a man of his word, an exceptionally kind spirit, a confidante, a friend and a continual source of support and inspiration for our family. A nurturing father has a uniquely important impact on the lives of their children. His is a lasting influence that prepares them for the challenges ahead. David is that sort of father. He has made our girls feel loved unconditionally, protected, as well as both seen and heard. As a father, he has taught them responsibility, instilled values and discipline, nurtured their creativity and love for learning and raised them to live life independently. As parents we share in all these things, but an intrinsic part of being a man is the ability to impart knowledge. As children and young adults, our father figures guide us in more ways than we realize. There are some that we understand clearly at the time, while others we may not appreciate until much later in life. Father's Day is that time of year to celebrate the dads, grandfathers and all those other special men in your life. The holiday was first observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington, but wasn’t officially recognized as a holiday until 1972. The woman who was the architect of this holiday was one of six children raised by a single father. She wanted to honor her father by creating a day that was the equivalent to Mother’s Day. The idea was met with some initial resistance, as many viewed it as overly sentimental and an attempt to domesticate manliness. The 'traditional' definition of masculinity has changed so much over the years and yet the whole idea of picking out the perfect present for your dad can be trickier than your average gift-giving duties. Some of David’s most treasured Father’s Day gifts were the vibrant crayon drawings our girls bestowed upon him each year. And now that they are older, they love to find ways to express their love and gratitude to him. I am often visited in my atelier by women who are searching for a gift for that special man in their life. It gives me great pleasure to create pieces for them and introduce them to my collection. I love the idea that my jewelry and accessories are heirlooms-in-the-making. I create modern pieces for men with a chic and comfortable sensibility, that I know will be treasured for years to come. David is not only a muse for me, but also my most elegant and masculine ambassador. He exudes an inner strength that is at the heart of the ZADEH man…and he, of course, is at the center of my heart. To all the fathers out there, I salute you. And to those who will be celebrating without your father this year, I wish you great strength and many blessings. xo Catherine
